Fan kicks on more than it used to and runs longer too?

Fan kicks on more than it used to and runs longer too?
what would cause the fan to kick on more often and run longer when i just start the car. It just started happening about 2 weeks ago. Any ideas?

thermostat or engine coolant temperature sensor..
in my case my thermostat was stuck open (82k miles).
my fan would kick on even when the car was trying to warm up, and would not get to the standard operating temp unless i had been driving for a good 15 min or so (as opposed to the normal 2-5 min warm up).
i replaced it with the help of a friend.. unfortunately it's like $200 assembly, but the DIY job isn't crazy.

the cooling fan shouldn't come on when the engine is cold. to me, that points to the ECT
there's a writeup on how to fix it in the tech articles. it's a cheap fix...just a little bit of a PITA.
when mine was bad, i would start the car, and with a cold engine, the cooling fans would kick into super-turbo-speed. after replacing it, all is well.

the engine coolant temp sensor is a pretty cheap and easy fix.
i did that first since it's like an $8 part and a 20 min DIY. unfortunately for me that didn't fix it, and the thermostat was the real issue.
