If all you want to do is read and reset codes and monitor different parameters the best bang for the buck is to pick up a ELM 327 OBDII bluetooth transmitter ($10→$20) and a $5.00 TorquePro app for your android phone. Hell, I've been driving down the road, had a CEL pop up, read the code and rest it without ever stopping the car.
Pretty cool app for $5!
I also have VCDS for heavier use but I use the TorquePro every day to monitor different parameters as I drive to and from work. Put it in the cup holder and it becomes another set of gauges.

If you are looking for a handheld device I use the Autel VAG505. I also have the Ross tech VCDS full version. As far as finding fault codes and resetting the Autel finds all the same codes. The VCDS comes into its own if you go further and start doing more analysis and adaptations etc.
