If you're willing to do your own maintenance and small repairs, the cost is not bad.

For my B5, the major cost was the usual timing belt/water pump/clutch. I did all other maintenance myself (oil, filters, brakes, light bulbs, battery) and fixed the small stuff myself (window regulator, ABS control unit pull, blinker relay). The 2 things I had to get a mechanic to fix were a crack in the exhaust manifold that he welded, and a blown CV joint cover.

In other words, the car had very few non-maintenance repairs. Only reason I sold the car at 10 years was because I lusted over the A5.

I do second the opinion to find a good independent mechanic once your warranty runs out. I've had horrible experience with Audi dealer service departments.

Also, if you're going to do your own maintenance, buying VAG-COM is indispensible.

My current car should be fine as it's new and under warranty. I'll be getting rid of it long before the warranty expires too.
