Default Looking to buy an 09 A4

Hello,

I am considering getting a 2009 Audi A4 2.0T Sedan Prestige Quattro. I've never owned an Audi before. I currently have a 2005 Saab 9-3 2.0T that I will be trading in. The Audi I am looking at has 36k miles on it. I am just curious as I have read that the 09 was when they re modeled the A4 if there are any major concerns with this particular A4. I've had very few issues with my Saab and don't want to buy anything that is going to be in the shop all the time. I've been reading reviews on some other car sites, but it's tough to put too much trust in those. Any advice would be appreciated. I was also looking at the BMW 3 series, Infinity G25x and 37x, Mercedes C300, and the Volvo S models. I am leaning towards the Audi because i love the look, but wanted to get your thoughts first. Thank you.

Oil consumption issues (search the forum). I would skip the '09 model. Take it to Audi and see if the Phases were done or if it needs it. Ask the owner flat out if they had an oil consumption issue and get it in writing if they say it never had a problem. In other words "buy as is" except for oil. I think they fixed the piston issue in the 2012- present models.

Not practical and if it is a private sale no one will own up to oil usage as they want to sell the car. If a dealer they will claim they have no history and you will still buy the car "as is". Even if the car is a CPO it still does not guarantee that it will not use oil . Once it is out of the lot it is your car. I don't believe the 09's are any different then the later models . They are a nice car and have good appointments. My kid has one and it has never been back to the dealer. Bought it with 22K on it and it now has 60K. It was a CPO car and the only things I have done was normal 5K oil and filter change , front brakes at 55K , air filter/cabin filter change and new set of tires. It runs great and uses 1 quart of oil at around 2700 miles.

By the way how much oil does your Saab use.

I've never had any oil issues with my Saab. I do my own oil changes using Mobil 1 0w-40 and it takes 6 qts every 6-7k miles.

This Audi is at a dealer, not private sale. I think it's a good value as they are offering g it at $17,700. Comes with navigation package as well. I've never owned a "luxury" brand and was just concerned that I'd have huge service bills once I started reading reviews.

I have a 09 as well and I do not have the dreaded oil issue.

I just had the water pump replaced under the extended waranty and the intake manifold replaced under the original warranty about 18 months ago.

Plastic intake manifold seems to be a problem with the first years of the B8 A4. Several people reported oil consumption issues, but it is not true that all the 09 has it...

I had an '09 Premium Plus that was a CPO car with 36K on it when I purchased it. My primary problem was in the suspension. Many of the suspension components were redesigned for the '10 models, since they had so many problems. Consumer Reports tears into the '09 for this issue, along with oil consumption and coils. The final straw with my car was the catylitic converter at 75k - covered but this is a 2400.00 repair that I did not want to face again as the car got older. There are '09 A4's that go without any issues other than regular maintainance, but in general it was not a good year and the cars have been steadily improved each year since.

Funny, I had a Saab 900 1.5 years ago too.

I've had my Audi for a couple weeks and I love it. After doing some research including talking to a few service advisors, this is a car to have. Even the latest reliability ratings had Audi near the top. If you can stand the Saab, you can stand the Audi. The Saab was, find a good one that's been serviced correctly and regularly, then you have a good unit. I'm thinking Audis are the same way.

Good luck and good choice.
