Default Emissions Service Action 17F9

Hello Fellow Members,

I received the following service action in the mail today.

Emissions Service Action 17F9 - Crankcase Pressure Regulating Valve
Certain 2011-2014 Model Year Audi Vehicles with 2.0L TFSI Engine

What is the issue?

On certain Audi vehicles with 2.0L TFSI engine, the diaphragm of the crankcase pressure regulating valve may have been damaged. If this happens, your vehicle may not pass an IM (emissions) inspection.

What will we do?

Your authorized dealer will inspect and, if necessary, install a repair kit for the crankcase pressure regulating valve. This work will take less than an hour to complete and will be performed for you free of charge.
Has anyone else received this? Canada or U.S?

My understanding, and believe me I'm just starting to wrap my head around this, is there can be two common problems with the Crankcase Pressure Valve.

1) Seized Closed, which results in excessive crankcase pressure. This excessive pressure results in leaking oil seals and gaskets. Additionally, moisture build up can occur which causes oil sludge.

2) Seized Open, which can result in a lean-condition (too much air) in the engine triggering a CEL and possible drivability issues like a rough idle and hard-starts.

How does it become damaged? Hard to say, perhaps wear and tear. Perhaps design flaw. Audi's recall campaign may indicate the latter. This could also be related to the oil consumption issue. Again I'm new to this so other members please chime in with more info.
