Fuel Economy

Lower octane will modify the timing. The knock sensor is "guilty" of that. So the temperature the engine runs at is different. Hence....O2 sensor fouling! This is not a quick thing, though.
No argument there.
What I have a problem with, is the "detergents in the higher grade fuel will help with carbon buildup". On a direct injection engine....the gasoline gets sprayed straight into the cylinders. And from what i've seen, the carbon/crud builds in the intake tracts in the cylinder head. So, since no gasoline travels through the intake tracts of the cylinder head......see where I'm going with this?????
I never put 87 in my 2010 A4. But my 2004 A4 1.8T is a dog as it is, it is driven only in town, 500 kms a month (if that) and it already has 225k on it. I only run 93 in it when I go in for emission testing
Another thing to consider....in Europe (where these engines were designed) the lowest octane gasoline is 90. Premium is 98!!!!

My kid runs 87 Mobile which if you go to their web site you can find that the same amount of detergent is in all of their blends. The kid has put 40K miles on the 09 CPO A4 without any engine issues other then a quart of oil every 2800-3000 miles. Your assumptions are unfounded. Oh MPG is 25/29MPG so the benefit of 87 ROI's.

Was that a complete thought, or did you hit the 'send' key prematurely?

When I run Techron thru the octane boost is wonderful!!! I'd buy 98 if I could!!!!
The price of gas for my cars are "Premium". Nobody put a gun to my head and made me buy a car that takes premium, nor did they change the rules after my purchase.

The idea that 87 octane gas will result in O2 sensor fouling is simply so much BS. Complete garbage. A stupid wives tale.
If that were the case, then millions upon millions of cars which were designed to use 87 octane regular would be suffering from O2 sensor fouling at such a rate it would be an international outrage.
The fact that people believe this nonsense shows just how gullible some folks really are.
