Fuel gauge illumination problem

Fuel gauge illumination problem
Help needed. My 2013 A4 Avant has an intermittent fault on the fuel gauge.
Whilst driving along the fuel gauge illumination suddenly starts flickering as if there is a loose bulb or wiring connection. None of the other gauges are affected. It's a very random fault which is consistent with a loose connection, sometimes it's ok, sometimes it flickers, and sometimes it goes out altogether, but the needle stays where it is.
Has anyone else experienced this, and how did you fix it?
I'm trying to avoid taking it to the dealer if possible, so any help on easy ways to access the back of the gauge would be most welcome.
