You have to remove them from the plastic housing. It's easy to get them out.

Looking forward to hearing if your fix resolves the problem. I have a 2010 Avant and I love everything about the car except for the shape of the seat back. I just don't understand why Audi designed the seat to have a bulge right where the seat back meets the seat. If you look at seats made by other cat manufacturers (even other Audi models), the lumbar support starts higher up. I was thinking that it might be due to the shape of the cushion underneath, but if your adjustment to the brackets works, I'll be thrilled.

Update: the seat is almost flat, the lumbar suport doesn't push my lower back anymore. No more back pain, but these seat are still the worst seat I have ever had haha.

Actually, one more question for you Fred. After adjusting the brackets, does the lumbar support function still work normally? i.e. can you still dial the lumbar support up and down, in and out? I just want to eliminate or reduce the bulge where the seat back meets the seat bottom.

Thanks again for your help with this.

The mechanism still works. If you put the mechanism the most foward possible; it's almost like the minimum setting from stock

Fred,

Can you offer any additonal guidance on removing the seat back? I tried following the steps you outlined, but I can't get it off. I am able to pull out the 4 tabs you circled in red, but am struggling with the clips on the top and bottom. I tried yanking the cover to the left and right, up and down, but can't get them to disengage. I am afraid that I'll break the clips if I do anything else!

Move it upwards from left to right, the two lower clips will unclip eventually. With a flashlight you can see where they sit, if you pry the cover back a little. Use a flathead screwdriver and unclip them.
