Default New Audi Owner and Navi Retrofit Project

Hi all,

he forum as Audi. Just bought a 2009 A4 Quattro 33K miles with the premium plus package in Dakar Beige. paid $21,800 before tax and DMV. Absolutely LOVE driving IT!! pretty much stumbled upon this car since I was in the market for a 2009 Acura TL-SH AWD with Nav and I could not let go of it at this price and how classy I thought the car looked.

The only "must have" option i did have to forgo was the navigation. Before buying I did some research and knew that doing the Nav retrofit was definitely possible BUT could be a costly ordeal. Especially if I went to the dealer, it would mean that taking out another loan on the navi option was a possibility. With that in my I started roaming eBay and have purchased some of the major hardware needed.

Below is a list of the major items I have put together so far. this forum as well as Audizine has been a great resource, So thank you ahead for everyone that takes time to contribute here so someone like me can be successful. Hopefully I can come up with a idiots guide to retrofitting a 3G MMI Nav once I complete this project.

Part# |Part Num |Paid/est. |Seller |Purchased |VIN Number
Control Unit Interface |8T0 919 609 |180 |German eBay Seller |YES |No
Head Unit |8T1 035664 B |338 |LKQ Recycling eBay |YES |Yes
Screen |8F0 919 604 |325 |JC Recycling eBay |YES |Yes
Radio |4F0 035 082 |150 |No |?
MOST CAN Gateway |8T0 907 468 |100 |No |?
Screen trim |8K1 857 186 F |75 |No |NA
Harness |Navstore or Kaufatec |325 |No |NA

The above prices are what I have paid so far and estimate to pay for these parts. After I bought the control unit interface I realized that I may have bought the 2G version even though I thought I saw the picture having a joy stick. Will update once I have the unit in hand.

I just have a couple of questions I hope you guys can answer for me. I tried to look up the answers but so far have not been able to find a firm answer.

-First of all: Are the part numbers and prices have paid/estimated in the ball park?
-My current setup has the Symphony system with the Music Interface & Sirius Sat radio. Does anyone know if I still need to buy/install the navi antenna or if the sharkfin is pre-wired with the Sat radio/ Music interface. As a tough as job as this is my biggest fear is having to take out the roof liner and mess with installing a new sharkfin.
-Would the gateway unit have already been upgraded with the inclusion of the Music interface or do I need to upgrade that? If so, is the part number I have (8T0 907 468) correct?
-Where is the current Radio unit and Sat radio box located? Looked on both sides but I can't see it.
-Would I have to change my Sat radio unit to be compatible with the MMI 3G unit even though I have a Sat radio box already?
-Which Part/Parts have I overlooked?
-Which one of these parts do I need the VIN number for? The guy I got the control interface said that I did not need it for that particular part.

Again thank you very much ahead of time!

Cheers
S

This is an extremely expensive and time consuming upgrade that requires almost an entire tear down of your interior.
See this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBQqTk-R2zc

Why not just go with x-carlink or like. There are some that convert your MMI screen into a touch screen. Super easy to install.

Actually saw this on YouTube nad to your point it def is not for the faint of hearted.

I briefly looked up the x-carlink after you mentioned it. Does the x-carlink act as the MMI interface?

Any idea recomendations of aftermarket GPS systems? Almost everything I have so far seen seems to have a external speaker which does not integrate with the stock system. If not for this would have bought it.

As for now.... I received the MMI head unit on Friday. think I got a pretty good deal cus I paid only 337 including shipping from LKQ. The screen (paid $325) and the control interface is coming in one of these days.

of the main hardware I still have the radio box, Can gateway and harness to go. I have not been able to find a decent price for the radio and the Part number (4F0 035 082) seems contradictory when shopping, so I have not pulled the trigger on this yet.

Does anyone know if an attemp was made to put the wiring harness together? I work on the technical end and at 30K feet above sea level this does not look like a awful DIY. Just have to look in to finding the proper Fibre Optic cables and connectors. Dont mind spending $300 but that seems awfully high for an aftermarket harness and it's not heartning because the Kaufatec folks take donket years to get back to emails.

To be honest, no one has actually done this and it's not likely to be worth it in the long run. If you've only bought one part ($300-ish) I'd say cut your losses now before you get to far down the road and find you can't do this.

Some of the most advanced owners/upgraders haven't even attempted this. You're talking about upgrading the entire wiring/optical system on top of protected components (needing coding to make them work).

I wish you luck in your endevour and May The Force be with you.

Thanks Dave! Sorry I could not get back earlier. My wife is due with our second on Friday and her hormones have been going haywire and driving me up a wall. Still thank god I was not born a woman!!

Anyway to update; Simce the choices are limited, I ordered the harness from Kufatec on Monday. Thinking it should be in the states in about 2 weeks I think.

I love these projects and as hard as it is I'm sure I can get the wiring aspect done but the VAG programming aspect is a much more delicate issue I think. Can it be done? Absolutely! But the time and studying and time invested behind this is another story.

I contacted EuroTech in Mahwah NJ and they quoted me ~400 to get this installed and VAG'ed. Don't mind that but they have not done this on a B8 and the guy said that they will research and get back to me. Research in the sense of getting in touch with someone who has already done the install.

Any opinions?

As for me procurering the parts, all I'm missing right now is the CAN MOST Gateway. Anyone have a contact in their network I could get this from? I've been l

I'm still leaning towards doing the wiring myself and poasibly working with someone to do a top to bottom DIY.

Don't mind any typos and grammar. Writing this on my mobile while at a bar and having my last beer before the big day on Friday.

I don't know much about the retofit, but I do know that you will need a new AMI unit - the non-MMI AMI and MMI AMI are very different and not cross-compatible..

Default I would seriously think twice about doing it.

There are numerous threads about the lack of updates for the Nav systems from Audi & NavTeq. And supposedly, NavTeq won't even discuss it any more with owners. They are told to contact Audi.

Also, with the move to a hard drive system for the NAV now...owners are not happy that even most Audi dealers have no clue as to how to install updates...which apparently aren't available anyway.

Seems like the latest maps available on a DVD are from 2009 or 2010. Not helpful.

Spend two or three hundred dollars on a Garmin or other maker who provides lifetime updates to their units, and save the money to use on other more worthwhile mods. Just my 2 cents.

Actually your 2 cents is worth more than a dollar. I seriously though about going with an aftermarket system but the challenge of trying in this case (and possibly landing flat on my @$$) is too tempting. Also a little bit too late to go back now.

Default Update: Most of the Parts are in

So as of Wednesday I have most of the parts in. Kinda taking the approach to be detailed as possible. This way the next crazy man like me who decides to go ahead with this project will have more resources.

If any of the moderators want me to reduce the number of pics, let me know.

Wondering if anyone in Northern NJ has a VAGCOM to do the initial setting before taking this to the dealer to unlock the security codes.

I'm not going to start the install until I have have everything I need. because if I have to go without a radio until I have to go to the dealer; it means that I will have to listen to my wife if she is in the car.... NOT HAPPENING!!

Also just replaced my stock 17" with these 19" Reps. will post pics of that later.

So far I am just missing the radio bracket in the trunk which for the radio. I ordered it from Meadowlands Audi for $60 and then also realized that I need another bracket for the dash/head unit.(Can someone please confirm this?. If anyone feels like I don't have all the parts needed or have the wrong parts let me know.

I'm also not sure if the car is pre-wired for the navigation antenna. If not will have to get that. Thinking it should be since the car currently has XM?

Here is a listing/pictures of all the parts I have received so far.

All the Parts received as of 08 27 12

<a href="http://s1159.photobucket.com/albums/p637/sharontha1/?action=view&amp;current=47c5ae41.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p637/sharontha1/47c5ae41.jpg" border="0" alt="All Parts"></a>

The Radio which goes in the trunk.

The MMI Control Interface. I made a mistake and ordered the 2GMMI on this but from what I researched the only drawback will be the inability to pan the map. If this becomes an issue I will replace it.

Kufatec Harness # 1. All connections on the harness seem to be pretty elementary with the exception of what looks to be a red power wire. As of now I have no idea where this goes but will have to do some research. Hope one of you guys would know.
