Using 89 or 91 octane in an Audi A4 2009

For my personal experience with other former cars , VWs and AUDIs , not with my 2011 A4 , using regular 87 gas can be OK but using 91 or better will save you gas , approx. a 10% difference on mileage on a full tank , so at the end was not saving on $$$$ and also the car was running better

I completely agree. It always surprises me that when people buy nice cars and complain about putting the recommended fuel in their cars. What are you truly saving? In my area the differences between grades is only about 10 cents/gallon. if you put in the cheap 87 stuff you are only saving about 20 cents/gallon. I usually put about 10-12 gallons per fill up. you are only saving $2-2.40 per tank per fill up. Are people really that broke that they have to save 2 bucks and make their ecu's detune for the cheaper fuel? if the difference was more substantial like $20 per tank then i can see, but 2 bucks?? come on now....

Wow, around here all the stations bumped that up to $0.15/grade (so $0.30 for premium vs. regular) back when the prices got high several years ago, and never backed that back down when the prices receded. In fact, I've noticed lately that a lot of the stations have bumped that up to $0.20/grade. I can still get premium for a $0.30 premium at QT, but I'm sure they won't be far behind charging more for it now that the others are.

Audi sells cars all over the world. Outside of US and Europe premium fuel is sometimes not available. There are also two ways "octane" is measured. The "research" and "motor" octane rating is different for the same sample of fuel. Most of the US has determined that an average of the two is what is reported. Many parts of the US has 93 octane gas, but California limits retail fuel to 91 octane.
It this reason that the motor electronics can adapt to low octane fuel.
You can use a tank of regular if there is no premium. The motor will adapt as soon as the microphone hears the pinging. Continued use will hurt your wallet because of the loss of mileage caused by the lower energy content of the fuel.
Your best bang for the buck is a top tier fuel. They contain additives that keep the Audilift happy.

Hi guys I just recently bought an 2009 A4 2.0T as well. It is currently been using 95 octane as it is recommended when I flip open gas lid. However would I be fine with using 91? In New Zealand 91 is much cheaper than 95 and I actually will make some good savings.
