Default Re-sale value of a new 2017 A4 after 5 years

Hello all,

I'm from Boise, Idaho and am thinking of financing a new 2017 A4 preferably with the Premium Plus package. Not very interested in the technology package, so without it the cost(MSRP) currently is around $44000.

Would really appreciate if someone could guide me in giving an insight on the re-sale value of this model, say after 5 years. Thank you in advance!

When buying a car ask if you can afford it with zero resale value at the end. Do you plan on keeping it for 5 years? 7 years? Or even 10 years? Does the cost per year make sense financially? Cars are a depreciating asset. In 5 years the world could be gone or gasoline could be nonexistent. It is better not to expect anything at the end and leverage any value as a net gain. Buy a car because it serves your purpose and you enjoy driving it.

I bought my Q5 almost 7.5 years ago. when factoring in repairs and stuff I still feel like I got a good value at almost 90k miles and still going. I didn't need a new car but I recently bought a new Q7 because I had a good year at work and wanted to get a second car as my daughter is starting to have various activities that make it nice to have some familial flexibility. this car is the second most expensive thing I've ever purchased so I made sure I got something I was going to be happy with. The money doesn't matter though. As long as I enjoy the car then I will think it is a good value.

PeteDin206 - Makes a lot of sense! However, just out of curiosity- in your experience would you be able to give a ball park figure say, for an A4 that costs 45 grand currently and which will have put on roughly around 30000 miles after 5 years? (i.e assuming the world doesn't come to an end or gasoline still hasn't ceased to exist )

I see 10 to 12k trade in range, and 15 to 20k retail. I have no idea what the price of an a4 was in 2012, one site said 32 to 36k. But there are so many factors I don't think that really helps you figure the price of a 2017 in five years though. That is just something that I don't worry about or think about. I'm a lot more concerned what I'll be worth in five years.

Use KBB or Edmunds used car pricing appraisal to gauge it. The actual sale value at the time will be be a little bit broader depends on the condition of the car. You will get an idea.

For a less than perfect benchmark you can looking at the leasing inputs.

Based on Audi's own lease terms, they are expecting an A4 to retain 59% of its value after 3 years and 36,000 miles.

So so safe to say that after 5 years and 60,000 miles and out of warranty the value will be decisively under half what you paid.

My 7 year old Q5 was worth approximately 25% of what I paid for it. It has 87k miles on it.

If you look at the total cost of ownership tool on Edmunds, it lets you know that you should expect the 2017 A4 to depreciate just over $25k over the 5 years.
