Tire tread depth on Quattros

Tire tread depth on Quattros
I blew a tire and put on the spare which is new and has more tread than the other 3. Was told by the tire store that one tire having more tread is bad for an all wheel drive Audi. All tread depth must be within 1/16 of each other. Is this so?
