What's with getting a new key??
I need a second key for a recently purchased 2009 Audi A4 Cabriolet.
The local dealer sells this for $234 plus $100 for cutting/programming.
There are a few places that sell the key on line, but they won't sell the uncut version. eBay has various new and used keys, but I am not sure the dealer will process one of these if I buy one.
Am I going to have to pay out $334 to the dealer, or are there other options?

I'm in the same boat as you. Just purchased a used 2012 Q5 and it only came with one smart key. I would like a spare, but the dealer wants $250 for the key/FOB and another $130 to cut and program it. Just for a cut key is $173. WOW
Is there another option for getting a spare key for my vehicle?

Keys
I have learned a little more about this. My dealer said they might set up and cut a key I brought in, depending upon what it is like. I think some dealers may not even look at an "outside" key, so you might ask yours if they will configure a key you bought elsewhere.
There are some Audi parts companies on the Internet that list a reasonably priced new blank key but, when I called them, they said they don't sell blank keys to people and that the ad was an error. (Confusing!)
There are various keys on eBay for a lot less that the dealer, but many of the used ones have the metal part already cut. There are a few ads on eBay for a blank metal key part, but I am not sure how you take apart the key fob to install the new key blank. It should not be difficult.
I found a used OEM key matching the part number on my existing key. (I think this is important.) It had an uncut metal part. I had planned to take it into the dealer and pay the $100 to get it programmed/cut.
It turned out that the dealer we purchased from got the second key in the mail.
I suggest that you are safer getting a used or new OEM key rather than a generic import. I am not sure if they cheap keys from overseas would be approved by the dealer who has to cut them. However, if you can find someone who has tried this, maybe they will know if a generic key can be cut by the dealer.

There are certified locksmiths around the country that can sell and program Audi keys, probably for less than an Audi dealer charges. Google it.

There is a good used Audi key on eBay, number 291838832955.
The metal part is cut, but the seller says that it is easy to replace.
Please check that the part number is the same as your working key.

I was lucky in that the used car dealer we bought from managed to get the second key. The mechanical part worked, but not the electronic part. There is information on the Internet in several places about how to set the code of a new key or key with replacement battery. No need to go to the dealer. However, the key has to be cut correctly first.
