Default 2012 A6 Coolant Temperature Too High!

Hi
I have a 2012 A6 Prestige with 62k on it. After about 20 minutes of driving or less depending on outside temp and ac usage, the car over heats and I receive "coolant temperature too high" as a message. I of course turn the car off and let it sit and cool down. I took the car to get serviced and was told there was an air pocket in the coolant system which they say was low. I drove the car for another 20 minutes or less and received the same issue. Has anyone ever had this issue before? I don't see any leaks or signs of water, the engine doesn't even seem to be really hot. I'm wondering if it may be a sensor error, or is it really that the water pump and thermostat need changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much....

Lots of thermostat failures. Some water pump failures as well.

This is the C5 forum have you tried the C6 forums?, although I do agree that CTS sensors do fail.

The 2012 A6 is a C7 platform. There have been several reported thermostat failures with the 3.0L TFSI engine. Some shops replace the water pump too.

Very informative indeed, but this is the C5 forum.

Agreed. It's more likely a thermostat failed closed. If I were king all thermostats would fail open…at least you could drive the car. Unsane audi engineers.

Probably end up pulling the w/p anyway to get to the thermostat..investigate w/p at that time.

Make sure the secondary coolant fan is working, too. Mine did this only when I turned the A/C on, turns out the electric fan had croaked.
