Just found this thread and got curious about what the thoughts on the oil consumption are now that more time has passed since the MY2012 launch of the C7 engine. The prompt to add more oil came up for my 2012 A6 at around 60K miles and I found it odd. I simply assumed they did not add the right quantity of oil during the last annual servicing which was just 3 months before the oil message came up.

I had looked at my oil level in the MMI recently and it's got about 1/5-1/6 left, and last service was about 10-11 months ago. I think I typically stop in 1-2 times between annual service.

Not ideal, but the stop to get oil usually takes less than 5 minutes at the dealer.

Come to think of it, real misers can change their oil at home, and fill with just enough, and have the dealer pay for the rest. I wouldn't do that, nor would any self respecting Audi driver. I'm just saying some less owners might...

Given my basic knowledge of how an engine works, this should not be happening in a well built modern luxury car.

That is 1/5 - 1/6 of the top quart. The MMI only measures the top quart . You still have several quarts of oil in your engine. How many miles did you accumulate over the 10-11 months during that period?

OK, so if you have not added any oil over that time period your engine would be using oil at roughly 1qt per 8000 miles which would not be excessive.

Thank you. I scheduled my 65K thinking I needed oil. Oh well...

I think part of the reason they stopped including dipsticks is because it's not uncommon to consume a bit of oil and people were coming in all the time and there's nothing they will do about it. It certainly wasn't the cost of the dipstick as the reason (probably a couple bucks in bulk).
My BMW 535i also did not have a dip stick. Dip sticks are not monitored regularly. Electronic measurement is a sure way to make sure you don't run out of oil

There seems to be a common thread running here for the 3.0T. My oil is changed every 10K at the scheduled service intervals. At 43K miles I saw the first low oil warning and checked with my dipstick. I was down one quart (actually it's a liter which is 1.0567 quarts). That was 8000 mile since it was last changed. My guess is that's normal for this engine once it reaches several thousand miles.
