+1 on the TDI. My /15 3.0T was in for its 15K service and dealer handed me a /16 A6 TDI. Wow. Computer said 33 mpg average for my commute to office through suburbs. It was rush hour but the traffic was not horrible. That wave of torque is delicious. A shame that we are where we are with VAG diesels.


My commute is rarely bumper to bumper nasty stop and go like one experiences in Toronto, NY, Atlanta and numerous other cities (I'm in suburban Detroit). When the planets line up (read: don't hit every red light and no nasty weather with reasonable, albeit rush hour, traffic flow) my gas mileage for my 15 mile commute is between 20 and 22 mpg, sometimes slightly higher or slightly lower. However, when weather turns nasty and I'm stuck in bumper to bumper traffic half or more of the way to/from the office I've seen as low as 16.5-17.5.


In summary, all depends on the traffic and weather conditions.
