Default A6 Wins Car & Driver Comparo

i didn't get a chance to read the article yet, however, the December issue of Car & Driver has the A6 winning a comparo over the Caddy CTS, Mercedes E350 and BMW 535i.

Audi seems to be winning a lot of comparos in recent years.

Interesting - over 200 views and not a single comment.

Over at Bimmerfest the same topic has over 5 pages and 125 posts.

Maybe finishing last in 4th place (535i) gets people more fired up than finishing first (A6).

FWIW, most posters at Bimmerfest are more upset with the 535i placing behind a Mercedes E350 (3rd place), than losing to Audi.

Truthfully, I had a 535Xi loaner (among many others) when I had the X5M, and its not a bad car. In this class, optioning the cars up will change where they place. The 5 series has tons of options that makes it competitive, and some that ruin it. Unfortunately, adding options also jacks up the price, which hurts its value proposal (and would make me get a 550 instead). The A6 comes pretty well equipped, depending on which trim level you get. Stuff thats optional on the BMW or Benz comes standard on an A6 Prestige. That helps keep the Audi a good value, as does Quattro.

I haven't seen the article, but I'd bet that most of the problems they had with the 535 was due to poor choice of options or poor set up of the chassis and drivetrain in iDrive.

The article is not online and perhaps few of us subscribe to Car & Driver to be able to read it to comment.

I looked at the Bimmer and Benz. They are both more expensive than the A6 Prestige when you try align the options. And the Audi has a better rust and corrosion warranty (12 years vs MB's 4 years).

I don't but into tech because it's just to make up for shortfalls in other areas. But the tech in the A6 is well-done and more useful. Lane keeping assist in the Audi uses actual steering vs opposite braking in the MB. The A6 has more room and is much lighter than the BMW.

Of course, C&D might have chosen the Audi and sunken the BMW just to increase sales of their magazine. Now I must go buy the damn thing so that I can read it and find out why.

Would love to read it. Do they put all the articles online eventually?

Haven't got my copy yet but I would assume it won based on price and quattro.

Its a pretty good article. They praised the A6 (with 19" wheels) for having the best handling and ride of the 4 vehicles. The handling received very good marks and was called out for handling better than any car as heavy as the A6.
They also appreciated the power (2nd quickest) and smoothness of the transmission. They called the A6 the "compromise" of the group as it didn't win any particular category but it had very good marks in more categories than the BMW, Mercedes or Caddy.
The interior and exterior design also received rave reviews as to the quality and understated appeal. Nothing too flashy like the caddy's red leather inserts. One interesting thing-they said the Audi (among others in the compare) had a "sport setting" for the suspension. That doesn't exist until you step up to the S6...

Like Atlanta A6 already said, it is a good article but I do not agree with the final results. There is no way the E350 is better the BMW. Here are my subjective rankings:

1. Audi A6
2. BMW 535ix
3. Cadillac CTS
4. Mercedes E350

I read the article yesterday. A6 was praised for being a better rounded car. Strong acceleration, great tranny, best roadholding, classic beauty, gorgeous interior. The demerits were spongy break pedal and not super-communicative steering (but better than BMW and MB).

Caddy was hailed as the new BMW. It had the best handling, best steering, shortest stopping distance (by 20 ft) which was in the Porsche Cayman territory, lightest car and most fun to drive. It lost some points for some engine harshness in full throttle acceleration and over-done interior. From reading the article, it feels that the Caddy should've won (I don't necessarily think that, but the editor's comments were leading up to that).

BMW really shouldn't have placed 4th. I don't think it's behind MB in my opinion. MB is the Buick of the group (no offense to the new Buicks, which are surprisingly well engineered, since they share the same platform with the Caddy). So, I only disagree with the 3rd and 4th place, not really 1st and 2nd.

Nor surprising for an Audi to take the top spot, but kudos to Caddy for a dramatic turnaround.

Perhaps C&D is hedging for long-term reliability as well? I've lived through horror stories on MB and BMW expenses, but they were nothing compared to the rumors of self-destructive Caddilacs at 100k miles.

From reading C&D over many years I never noticed they cared an iota about the reliability of cars. That's why BMWs were always rated at the top there and never knocked down for reliability issues, no matter how widespread.

You guys should really go read www.bimmerfest.com forums for F10(current 5-er). The owners are soooooooo hurt. Accusing C&D that "checks from BMW stopped coming" and they punish the Beemer to "I never cared for C&D opinion" to all competitors are ugly have terrible design. It's so funny to read all that. But it's true, not many dispute A6's top spot. They are mostly furious about MB and Caddy placing higher.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? There's no one perfect car in this category but if it were up to me, the ranking would be:
1) A6
2) 535
3) E350
4) Cadi

I've considered the 535 but really couldn't get past its looks. The E350 is something that my wife would drive (not very exciting). As for the Cadi... not really into them. Only GM product I'd pay my hard earned $$$ would be the new vette.

I couldn't disagree more. The Caddy is clearly a better car than either the BMW or Benz. Its not an attractive car, but its a better car. The Audi and Caddy are obviously battling for spots one and two, with BMW and Benz playing for the 3rd and 4th spots.

I have not read the article, but I cross shopped most of these (except the Cadillac - too many horror stories about reliability) and I would have it

1) A6
2) E350
3) 535
4) Cadi

I actually liked the MB. And I previously owned two 5 series Bimmers and had never considered a Benz. But to me the E350 is a better car for the money than the 535

Wait until they test the CTS-V with 420 HP!

There are CTS v-sport and CTS-V. V-sport has 420HP and V will have more. Last time I checked.
