Default ACC radar units stolen on S6 in 15 seconds

Here's one from an S6 owner I've not heard of before. Sounds too easy - $2700 each and both gone in 15 seconds. It used to be stealing airbags was a prime target - now it's this, apparently. Something else to worry about for us ACC owners.

Lovely. Is that a Comprehensive insurance claim?

Also wondering where he got his prices. I just looked them up and neither one is $2700. Right is the more expensive one at $2133, the left is $1728, both MSRP. Wholesale is 1706.40 and $1382.40.

Maybe he was quoted with labor? If the thief damaged any wiring, etc., dealer labor charges could be stiff. Even if just the parts and he's off on the prices, they're still not cheap to replace. Certainly more than the wiper blades which are the only other things I can think of that could be stolen in that short a time.

Why do you doubt it? I don't believe it's a stretch to think a practiced, motivated thief with a few simple tools and no concern for proper removal procedure or collateral damage could do it quickly. The OP says his company's security camera has the theft on video - ask him if he's making it up. Or you could leave your car in his parking lot for a few nights to see if the story could be verified.

The way the guys post is written doesn't lend itself to fully believing it but that doesn't mean it is absolutely false. Either way it would obviously have to be a professional that would even know how to remove them and that quickly and then be able to dispose of them for a profit.

I believe that $1000 is what the dealer charges to align the cameras/active cruise systems.

That's what the body shop told us about fixing some bumper rash on our A8. The paintwork was cheap, but getting Audi to re-align the cameras and ACC after the bumper was put back on was very expensive.

I agree on the Pros. The stolen parts shadow industry is bigger than most realize. Evidence the market in stolen air bags reported over the last few years. There are professional thieves that specialize in this kind of thing and have honed their art even to where a car can be totally stripped by a swarm team in a remarkably short period of time. (Drop a car off on the side of the Cross-Bronx Expressway in NYC for a couple of hours at night to see this in action). These guys also have their outlets established to dispose of the parts.

If I didn't care about damage, with a few tools (and something more than 15 seconds), I bet I could rip out the ACC lenses from my car. Assuming I actually took the bet, of course.

My car is at the dealer now having this done after the bodyshop fixed my front end. They quoted my insurance company $450 for the recalibration but they may have been giving them a deal because they are going through and resetting/rechecking all the electronics.

Do you automatically believe everything someone posts? He's got one post, and it's written in all caps. No pics either. I doubt it's true as well.

As hard as it is to believe we had a thief steal a catalytic convertor off a car in an open parking lot with cameras where I work. This in a lot with employee traffic all day. How do you crawl under a car cut one out and add a flex pipe so the victim know until the next day when the check engine light went on without being noticed?

1. It's the OP's first post.
2. There's no mention of how the theft was realized:
2a. it did take only "15 seconds," so what tipped OP off that something's wrong? Does he give his car a walk-aound and pre-flight check before he heads home each time?
2b.. There's no mention of, "I got in my car after work and all the ACC failures went crazy, so I took it to the dealer and ..."
3. These things do not just "pop off."
4. A real victim would elaborate on the story.
5. He makes no mention of how much it cost him to repair.
6. He didn't post any photos... OP's thread is useless without photos.

It would be nice to have some validation on this. Anyone, including vendors, ever removed/re-installed these items of concern?

Thanks.

Although I can't contribute about the specifics of the ACC units, in principle, Audi makes so much from labor, it's hard to imagine anything coming off the car in 15 seconds.

I assume that it if did, it would be sent back for redesign for it to take at least 30 minutes to remove (even if you're not being delicate about the rest of the car).

True enough for dealers but a different kettle of fish for an experienced team say, in the South Bronx. Kind of like having your wheels rotated at a shop vs. a Formula One pit crew except the pit crew will avoid collateral damage and the Bronx crew could care less if other parts get mangled. Whether or not the ACC story is true, with a crowbar, hammer and other tools of their trade, motivated, professional thieves will find a way to take anything they deem valuable and resalable (up to the whole car itself). And they will do it much faster than any service tech.

Here's one that actually happened.....1972...I was not the perpetrator.

Two businesses share a parking lot. The owner of an old beater has a battery on it last legs. He finds a nice, nearly new car and swaps his battery for the one in the nice car. A few days later he checks the nice car again, and sure enough, the owner has purchased a brand new battery. He them exchanges the stolen battery for the new one. The owner of the nice car is none the wiser, and the thief has the brand new battery.

But, but, but - so you think an Audi is assembled like an Abrams tank and can't be stripped?
