Default Accidentally shifted N while driving?

Hi,

My sister has a 2012 Audi A6 with the CVT transmission. Today on her way home from college she said the EZPASS holder fell and she was reaching to get it when she bumped the shifter to N without realizing it. The car revved to nearly 7k RPM before she realized her mistake and bumped it back into D. She didn't wait for the revs to settle down before shifting it back to D because she panicked. However according to her the cars driving fine and did not even clunk the least bit when she shifted from N to D.

I was wondering if this could cause any damage or will the computer protect any damage from happening? I know the Audi CVT were known to be terrible but this was the new design but any thoughts?

Also sometimes the car makes a tinny noise when making a left turn while giving it gas. Any idea what that could be?

Thanks

From my knowledge, the computer will protect the transmission/engine from damaging itself. I usually put my car in neutral when I'm at a long stop light, and once in a while forget I had it in neutral. When I give it gas and shift back into Drive, the car eases forward, kinda like a manual when you let of the clutch. So far I haven't had any problems.

As for the noise while turning, can you describe it a little more? Is it more of a squeaking/creaking or rubbing sound?

Edit: If it's a whining sound that occurs when you turn the wheel all the way to the left or right, while turning hard or tight, then I think it's just the power steering motor…if where talking about a whining/mechanical sound then it shouldn't be a problem.
If your still worried, just take it to Audi and see what they say. They can't do any work until you agree.

I don't think you have any problems with it going in and out of neutral like that. I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Related story: a couple of years ago I let my son with his permit drive my 2011 A6 (C6 with 6spd tiptronic) while I was with him in the passenger seat of course. He was coming to a stop in front of his school with the car rolling in 1st at around 3-4 mph whin him gently braking when he got ahead of himself and slammed the shifter into park. The transmission made an loud and unsettling ratcheting noise which caused him to realize his mistake so he slammed on the brakes. That was unsettling but the tyranny never showed any signs of a problem after that.
