So the big question...

Is the Audi Connect module unlocked? If not, will T-Mobile (or maybe Audi) provide and unlock code? Id such a code even available?

I will guess and dsy yes it is, it even gives you options to change the server address and stuff like that. Most likely AT&T will work but the car will need to be programmed

Interesting.

Some of the options described on this thread may not be possible.

I called T-Mobile who transferred me to an Audi Connect hotline. According to the rep, the data module in the Audi cannot be unlocked. I guess you would have to replace it if you wanted to use a new carrier. THAT BLOWS!!! She did seem a little unsure, so I wouldn't take that as a 100% certainty.

I also called AT&T. They will issue a new SIM card for free, but once they do so, the previous SIM is deactivated. Thus, I can't get a backup SIM officially. I guess cloning is not really possible anymore if you use both SIM cards at once. AT&T would detect the duplicate and problems for me would ensue.

It looks like the only options to avoid T-Mobile and their fees would be tethering another phone (if possible) or replacing the Audi Connect module in the car. Not looking as optimistic as at the start of this thread.

I will still test my current AT&T SIM and report back.

Regarding unlocked T-Mobil phone - if you call T-Mobil and told them, that you going to Europe and will take your phone with you - they will unlocked your phone. This happen to my coworker.

Default tried using my wife's iphone 3gs sim card on my A7

Using the appropriate info:

APN: wap.cingular
username: WAP@CINGULARGPS.COM
password: CINGULAR1

I was able to use ATT sim card for google map ONLY. Other online functions of the car don't seem to be working with the ATT sim card. Plus, you only get 2G instead of 3G - see attached photo.

Odd that it only works for the Google maps - it may be that Audi has a special server connection to T-mo for the other items, but am surprised they enforce this as a limit.

But the 2G and WAP configuration make total sense. Using a non WAP configuration (ISP instead), may resolve the other connectivity issue though.

What's the difference between WAP and ISP?

also, I suggest someone else on the forum to try it with his/her non-iphone sim card to see if you can get it to work with other data functions of the car. Maybe it's an iphone account thing.
