It appears that the future A8 is very similar to todays model but with the additional information from the laser scanner. This device provides the additional input to allow for a more comprehensive algorithm to accomplish the same as what is implied by todays model.
The RS7 video seems to heavily rely on a database of present terrain. Mapping the USA to the centimeter suggests a hard drive of significant proportions, mapping a racetrack, not so much.

Yeah self driving on a short, closed, fully mapped course to the millimeter is not exactly impressive by today's standards.
The demo they had of a car self driving in the city/highway was much more impressive.

"Mapping the USA to the centimeter suggests a hard drive of significant proportions, mapping a racetrack, not so much." I recall a company that was digitally mapping the US. They went to IHOP, and bought a "generic pancake", digitized it, and compared it to their digitized map of the US to prove--Kansas is flatter than a pancake. ;-}
