Yeah, I was all excited to try this feature out.
I went kicking for it, nothing, then I went kicking for it, nothing, then I hit my knee against the bumper by accident, getting upset because I banged my knee on the bumper, I swept my leg back and forth, then I kicked again, this time, dislocating my knee. Popped it back into place, limped back over to the bumper, kicked a few more time, it hurt so good in my truth of engineering quest. Answered a quick question from my neighbor about why I appeared to be epileptic, kicked some more and then gave up.
About 4 seconds later the trunk opened. Cannot wait to try again! Winning!

The only time mine has not worked has been when I really needed it to work: both arms full, swinging my foot around like one of the three stooges then setting my packages down in the snow and using the hand sensor under the trunk lid.

The trick seems to be a quick kicker like motion followed by a slow pull back. Mine is now working 100% of the time after 6 months of frustration!

Mine's always worked ok, swift kick in and out. The manual does offer some advice on how to make it work, and does say that that it deliberately only senses a certain movement to avoid false openings.

Stand close to the car and do one kick motion (like you are passing a soccer ball) and wait. I got mine working 95% of the time. I do get very anxious about the 5% when it doesn't work, because it happens at the worst possible time - when I have something really heavy.
I also get very pissed at Audi Engineers when it doesn't work - to the point where I curse at them .... and I'm not a violent person
