They could also be hiding in the sky cam that gives the top down view. I managed to fool the grandkids with that one yesterday.
The theory only partially explains the mysterious opening since I have never had a warranty repair in my less than 870 miles and ~3 weeks of ownership. Maybe it's based on the price you pay.

I'm in PA and we just got hit with a nice storm. I found that the trunk release wouldn't work after they salted the roads yesterday. I believe wherever the sensor is, it is very prone it being obstructed.

I'm at 50% success rate, its frustrating. And like someone pointed out, you look a goof who wants to badly go to the bathroom if this thing doesn't work.

WORD OF CAUTION
Don't wash your car with fob in pocket.
While drying the car yesterday I activated the hands free trunk, thankfully a was not still using the water hose!
That's the second time it opened while i was not trying. It has a mind of it's own....
I think I actually heard my car laughing at me!!!

^^^ Good Caution. After spending some time operating the motion release. My success rate is 90%+ I give it one small kick (like completing a pass to a 1yr old with a beach ball) and wait 1-2 seconds. Works pretty well.

Don't wash with the key in your pocket anyway. It drives the keyless access crazy. It will constantly lock and unlock the doors, and fold and unfold the mirrors, if you have them set that way. Gotta either leave the fob in the car, or out of range of the car, when washing.
