Like I said above, you shouldn't use new pads on used rotors. They either need to be replaced or turned. If they're too thin to be turned, then theres no option but to replace them.

Many manufacturers require new rotors with new pads, regardless of the condition of the old rotors.

For a zillion years people have been replacing pads without turning rotors with no problems as long as they aren't warped. The metal is different now? Audi's are so good they have throw away rotors? You may be right, I just can't believe it.

I just did a google search...first 3 hits had a total of 14 comments saying you're wrong. :-P

Besides...The OP is saying the Audi dealer won't turn them. They just want to sell him new rotors before they even looked at them!

Audi, BMW, AMG, Porsche and SRT say that I'm right. Who do we believe, some no nothing shadetrees (if that), or a bunch of German engineers?

They may not be able to be turned. They may be too thin. Rotors have a minimum thickness. If turning them puts them below that, they can't be turned. Audi may be producing them at that thickness to save weight.

This may be policy to protect themselves from liability, but it's been common practice in the auto industry for decades on all other makes and models. Just because the dealer won't do it doesn't mean it can't be done reliably.

I've never heard of a brake job being done without at least turning them. Trying to bed new pads on top of the crap left over from the old ones is guaranteed to kill them.

If you wanna believe that every car in the world except Audi, BMW, AMG and Porsche can reuse rotors that aren't warped and can be turned a couple thousands to resurface that's your prerogative. I choose to believe the Dealer is A) Crazy for charging $1900. and B) Crazy for saying they need to be replaced sight unseen. I'd take that car elsewhere in a heartbeat.

Actually, a lot of the price they're charging must be labor, because the parts aren't that expensive

Front Rotors (each)- $190 MSRP, $153.14 WS
Rear Rotors (each)- $134 MSRP, $108 WS
Front Pads (set)- $145 MSRP, $116.87 WS
Rear Pads (set) - $90 MSRP, $72.54 WS

So thats $883 MSRP, $711.69 in parts. They're charging a freaking grand to do the swap.

I'd be damn curious when BMW does the free brake job if they always use new rotors or if they turn them if the pads are caught in good shape still.

I'm not buying the thought that Audi leaves no tolerance to turn a couple thou.

I had them done on both the X5M and the 750. They replaced the rotors on both. You can always tell, because the rotor hats get rusty and nasty.
