Ok, so how can one be sure the crank won't be in the oil as gravity moves it around in the overfilled sump, say in hard turns? Surely there must be a reason Audi does not recommend overfilling (and warns when it occur).

I guess we can debate this until the cows come home (obviously to no avail). As I said before, if one wants to overfill the oil because they feel it's fine to do so, be my guest. I see no reason to do so therefore I chose to follow the manf. specifications. Done and done.

Default what would happening if climbing or descending

for a period of time and you were overfilled ?

Yes the warning is to be heeded.

I can say I was over about 1.5litres and the performance was aweful.
I'm lucky so far in that things appear to be back to normal.

from what I understand there's the crank hitting issue creating a froth that the oil pump tries to circulate and with all the air bubles kind of creates a domino of 'bad things' in the system

Splat !

Just Google the correct one for availability and best price.
Searched and searched but can't find a dipstick for the TDI. If anyone has purchased one, what is the name of the company?

We've already covered the buying part. Here's the install procedure:

1) open hood
2) locate dipstick tube with triangular plastic cap in engine bay
3) pop off plastic triangular cap from dipstick tube
4) insert purchased dipstick
5) close hood

Could you give us a little bit more of a clue as to where the dipstick tube is please?

I can only speak to the 3.0T. The tube is on the right side of the engine towards the front. I would imagine it isn't hard to find on the other two engines. Look for a filler tube with the plastic cap affixed to the top.

Thank you. There is a tube, with a plastic cap (with a hole in it like you would see on a key fob), and the cap is loose in that it turns easily. It is located on the right side of the engine, as you stand in front, between the radiator and the engine itself.
The top of the tube is almost as high as the plastic cover on top of the engine.

That's the one. Just pull the cap off and insert the dipstick and you're ready to check oil level. As with any car, it should be on level ground with the engine off for a few minutes to allow the oil to return to the sump.
The dipstick will have range markings from "Add" to "Full". The range represents about a quart. Be sure you have the right dipstick for your engine model.

You skipped over the steps of unlock car door, open car door, and pull hood release. Lol
