Default Possible A6 PP 2.0 owner

Hi

Just figured I'd get some insight. Really on the fence on this.

Basically, father-in-law passed away about a month ago. He had an Audi A6 PP 2.0, 2014 model. He has around 6-7000 miles on it.

As far as I can tell, the only damage that the car had was him doing something to the 2 left-sided wheels and rims, requiring close to $2200 worth of repairs (all done at an Audi dealership). -- Have a scanned copy of the receipt from the Audi dealership.

I haven't seen the car in person. Car is in Wisconsin, I live in Texas.

They lawyer my wife and sister hired are trying to sell the car, for the probate process to continue on. They had an arrangement to have the car seen by the local audi dealership, but they pulled some crap about not wanting to get involved, want it in the shop, etc. I think they are posturing and trying to drive the price of the car down.

About $10k is owed on the car still.

I'd love to be driving the car, but its a site on unseen kind of situation. Its in a different location and would be hard to get up there any time soon to fetch. So I'd have to arrange it be shipped down by carrier or pay someone to drive it down.

Our car situation. Wife has a 2012 jetta gli with about $10k left on that(26k miles) - (has some front damage - caused by a vw dealership in Baltimore). Also have a 2014 Mazda CX-5 GT (20k left on loan, 29k miles).

Thoughts?

Both cars above are our first car purchases as well. Thoughts are that we'd probably look at selling the gli and maybe my wife taking the mazda.

Thanks in advance

First, $2200 is more damage than 2 wheels and maybe tires. Was there any damage to the suspension? Second, you don't say how much the lawyer is asking for the car, just what is owed. Why would your wife and her sister hire a lawyer when you and your wife have an interest acquiring it? Is there a price concession for your wife as daughter of the deceased? Does her sister have any interest in acquiring it? Are there other relatives involved in the estate? Is there a will involved? Not trying to be personal here but trying to understand the situation as to value, disposition, etc. Until some of these issues are understood, it's impossible to answer your question, at least for me.

From the receipt, it looks like an alignment and new rims as well.

Lawyer isn't asking for anything for the car. He is the estate attorney. Estate is to my wife and sister-in-law. No other family members involved. Car is part of the estate going through the probate process. Father-in-law had a loan from Audi Financial Services. So what is owed is part of the original car loan.

At this point I think sister-in-law just the car dealt with (due to give birth in a week). She lives in NYC and has no interest in the car (hasn't driven in over a decade). Husband has never driven a car before in his life. While she would potentially like some of the proceeds, we've decided to split some UTMA accounts my wife got access to try and make everything as equal as possible.

Hope this clear it up some more.

I guess to clear it up, sis-in-law shouldn't really throw up too much of a road block. She's also asked if we wanted the car previously. At first we both felt selling it would be easiest thing to do. Hasn't turned out that way surprisingly.

You still haven't said what you and your wife would have to pay for the car. If you only have to pay off the $10 loan, that would be a great deal on a 2014 even after cost to ship. It's still under the manf. warranty so there is no need to worry about issues the car might have.

I'm looking at it as only having to pay for the $10k loan balance. And then probably selling our GLI (may not make off of it at this point).

Ir we need to pay my sister-in-law as well, I don't think its worth it at all.

If $10K is the price plus shipping, go for it. If you don't like the car you can always sell it and pocket the difference. IMO, this is a no-brainer.

I agree with Snag, if you can get into this car for under $20K, you could sell off one of yours to recoup some of the outlay.

To put this in perspective, I was able to buy my 2010 A6 Prestige with 94,700 miles for $17,200 which was decently below trade in value and about the best price I could find for an A6 in my area.

A 2014 A6 2.0 with 7K miles has got to wholesale for north of $25K - a nice markup over $10K I'd say. An Audi dealer would be selling it for over $35K.
