In northern climates, the freezing weather causes water to push up on the asphalt causing it to break apart. As time goes on, the asphalt just breaks away and causes a hole in the roadway. Some are small and others are huge. The outcome results in damaged rims and/or tires.

Yeah. But they are caused by rain water washing away the dirt under the road. When there is no more earth supporting the road, the weight of the cars will crumble the asphalt.

We get them, but not very frequently.

Potholes are what is created when a governing body utilizes road maintenance funds for frivolous spending.
The roads in California are getting terrible because funding is being shunted towards politicians' self serving interests.

BTW - Potholes are also created when an indentation in the road surface fills with water and it then freezes. Frozen water is greater in volume than liquid water and the increase in size breaks the asphalt and is the start of the degradation of the bonded aggregate used for the surface. Constant tire pressure then continues the breakage of the surface almost exponentially until the repair is concluded.

That actually sounds more like a sinkhole. We have those all over here in PA.

Here in MA we have our own name for these holes and really don't care what causes them. Our sole concern is learning how to gymkhana around them and if not entirely successful doing so, finding where the nearest rim repair is located. Or body shop if it's a really big one.

Like this Mass-hole for example.
