Default Pressing the engine start/stop button while driving

Hi,

me and my friend were having a conversation about my 2012 A6, and he asked me what happens when I press the engine start/stop button while driving.
I hadn't thought of that scenario up until he mentioned it, and now I'm curious as well.
I'm too chicken to try it myself, so I was wondering if anyone knows.
I would imagine there's some sort of a safety trigger, so pressing the button won't have any effect till the gear is set to "park", however this is just my thought.

I am looking at buying my first Audi and thought of this during my test drive because the start/stop button is on the console and not the dash.

I put the car in great and pressed the button and the motor stopped!

You could go to a big empty parking lot and test it out. Drive about 15 - 25 mph and hit the button and see what happens. I think the motor will die but the steering should not lock, hopefully. You will lose power steering.

If you decide to test it out let us know how it goes.

I've tried this on my A5 and A6 previously....ya know what happened....nothing.

I believe you have to push and hold for the car to shut off. That I have not tried.

The time to test the theory IS on a test drive.

I think the more interesting question would be, what happens when you pull the e-brake lever?
