Default anyone put winter tires on 17" wheels?

I ordered a 2013 A6 3.0 premium plus with 18" rims,(due next week) but the premium (non plus) model comes with 17" rims. I believe the premium and premium plus 3.0 A6s have the same size brakes and calipers, so I should be able to put 17" rims that will fit. Tire Rack and the dealer say I can't put 17" wheels on my car, but some owners have reported using Moda 17" rims. I am reluctant to order 17" from Tire Rack, as they say it is my risk if they don't fit, and if mounted with tires, no return. Who has put 17" rims on a 2013 A6 premium plus that came with 18" wheels. What brand, and where did you buy them? Today the dealer called to say even Audi recommends 18 " wheels for winter tires on cars that come with OEM 17" wheels. Why? I hate to buy Audi OEM 17" wheels for my winter tires because of the cost.

Buy one rim and try it on the cars without mounting a tire on it. You don't need a tire to check caliper clearance. Buy three more if it fits.

I did think of that, and it may be my only option. I just wondered if anyone put 17" rims on a premium plus A6 with the 3.0 engine. The winter tire I want, Dunlop ws 4D will not be available for the 18" rims this fall, but will be in 225//55/x17. Also, lighter to store in my garage, as I get older, the tire/wheel combo gets heavier, so I prefer 17, with its narrower taller rubber, which is better in winter anyway.
Thank you

Default Check TireRack - My 2011 worked well with 17"

My 2011 came with 18" and sport package. I am running 17" with Dunlops and they work great. I am guessing if the base model has 17 compared to yours, you should be good, but be aware no all 17" fit. Hence, check Tire Rack. 17" make so much more sense for snows ...

^^^^This. It's likely only a very few 17" wheels will fit. Tire Rack is usually on top of this....

Tire Rack should be on top of this, but they are not. They say it can't be done with any of the 17" wheels they sell. Yet some Tire Rack customers say they used the MODA11 wheel. I guess I will have to order one wheel, try it on, and then if it fits send it back so they can mount and balance all 4. Any other suggestions? I know 17" fit the 2011, but not clear if they fit 2013 A6 premium plus with 3.0 engine, since the OEM wheels are 18"
