Mine had been showing 2G for quite a while, that is until I drove to Seattle. While I was there the MMI showed 3G and the speed seemed a bit faster.
On my way to work I didn't think to check if it was still displaying 3G, but I'll check on my way home and reply then. I live on an island, but I know T-Mobile has 3G up here because it displayed 3G during my trial period.

Fix for AT&T 2G on Truphone SIM
If anyone stumbles on this post as I did, here's how I fixed the stuck AT&T 2G issue on my Audi Q5.
Step 1: (skip this step). After a mostly useless call to Truphone, who told me the likely problem was my car not supporting 1700mhz (after I told them repeatedly it had worked until today). They did inform me that I have a dual personality sim (micro and full size), which turned out to be very useful.
Step 2: I decided to pop the sim out and find a tmobile phone to put it into. I only have a micro sim phone, but luckily the truphone sim I have is able to be popped out into a microsim (this was not obvious to me). Upon putting it into the phone, I noticed it again was picking up AT&T. I manually set the phone to Truphone/T-Mobile, saw that it picked up 3g (H, actually) on the phone, and verified I could surf.
Step 3: Replace the microsim into the truphone adapter, and pop it back into the Q5. Initially I saw 2G on T-Mobile, but after waiting 60 seconds or so, it again picked up T-Mobile 3G.
I have no idea what caused it to be in this state, but if you happen to have a T-Mobile phone lying around (with either sim format), you might be able to fix it. I created an account to post this information, so I am hoping it helps out the next person who finds himself/herself stuck on AT&T 2G with a Truphone SIM.
Drive safely out there.

So, I ordered the Truphone SIM. It works fine, but only will pick up 2G as the only network it wants to connect to is AT&T. To get 3G, must be connected to T-Mobile. I asked Truphone tech support about the issue and they suggested taking the SIM out, putting it in a phone, select T-Mobile 3G network, register it, remove and put back in car. Didn't work. When I informed Truphone, they sent this reply:
I am writing on behalf of my colleague Nuria. We have just got a reply from our technical team regarding your issue. If the sim card connects and works properly in your mobile device it means that there must be an issue with Audi system. However there should be a way in your Audi system to manually select the T-mobile network. In this kind of situation you should contact them in order to receive proper assistance.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
Have a great day,
Kind and warm regards,

So does anyone know how to get this SIM to connect to T-Mobile?

I think this issue has been addressed in the past.
Mine sometimes moves into 2G, but my fix has worked every time
1 - Eject SIM card
2 - Reset MMI (press MMI **** + button upper right of the **** + button lower left of the ****)
3 - Re-insert SIM card
I've not had an issue resetting with this process.

I went the route of a new SIM from Truphone
sent a replacement. Activated it in a handset first and selected T-Mobie 3G network. Then put it in the Audi and voila! Stayed on T-Mobile 3G.
