Default Upgrade to '16 Infotainment/MMI/Nav?

It sounds as though the '16 has some new hardware altogether powering the infotainment gear, but I wondered if a '14 (highest non-B&O package) could gain some of the new features (like Siri Eyes Free). I know with my '05 C6, we could at least upgrade MMI a bit without hardware changes, and the upgrades sound like they just add a good level of polish to the system. There has to be a question about this on the forum somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks!

The hardware is completely different.

That's a bummer. I assume it wouldn't be worth it, but do you think if you replaced the head unit that it would work just fine with the rest of the gear so it could be done. I'm just thinking of down the road if someone totals their A6 and there are spare parts. Thanks!

I believe the 2016 revamped MMI including AT&T LTE, a faster NVIDIA Tegra processor and other new features (no Apple Carplay or Android Auto yet) would require completely new hardware and software. Even if it were to be possible, it would be a very expensive proposition to the tune of many thousands of dollars.

Bummer. Too bad Audi doesn't do what consumer electronics companies would do and find ways to keep older cars updated. I'm sure they could do something like Siri Eyes Free with software

It would cost you about $2K in h/w updates to retrofit the new MMI in the C6 chassis. Since you would be updating from 2G to 3G+, you'd need the following:

1. mmi
2. keyboard panel
3. radio
4. harness with fibreoptic
5. screen
6. screen trim
7. new B&O amp if car came with one
8. 4 hours to retrofit
9. visit to audi dealer to remove component protection.

Oh wow, now that would be a big (and awesome) change. I wouldn't do it, but that's less that I would've thought. I was actually thinking about for a '14 S6 to '16 level. After having my (albeit problematic A6) I talked my dad into buying an S6 which I hope might come my way when he is ready for something new. Of course he'd enjoy the updates too.

The control module and screen alone for a 2014 A6 shows $2317 (presumably the 2016 will be more). Add in the other parts mentioned with labor and the cost will be much, much more than $2K.

Just was thinking that the screen might not need to be replaced. Unless the resolution isn't supported by the screen, I'm not sure it would matter.

Good points...I based my estimate more from the perspective of a salvaged vehicle via and after market supplier vs. brand new from Audi direct.
