Default Window Tint

I'm planning on getting a windows tint. I have white car. Is 35% good? (I don't want to get pull over) Any film I need to go for?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on your state laws. Illinois has a no tint policy…however you can get away with a 30% tint. Personally, I think 30% is the perfect tint for a car, that's what my family's been running for years.

I have FormulaOne Pinnacle 30% tint all around. It's a ceramic tint which supposedly does not cause electronic interference, and has better heat rejection which was my main purpose.

I'd consider 30% to be medium darkness. You can still see a bit from the outside-in depending on the interior lighting and angle. And you can still see from the inside-out especially at night.

You'll have to check your state's tint laws to see how dark you can go.

I have 30% as well and don't think it is that dark. It works well in Florida.

I'm in Michigan and they have funny laws,"Any darkness can be applied 4 inches from the top of the window." Basically they don't want you to do anything. I had 20% in the past and got pull over once and had to take it off. it was just unlucky case.
Thanks guys. I think I will go with 30% then.

Legal Aftermarket Tint Calculation Tidbit: If one is wishing to be legal in a state that permits a specific level of window tint, (particularly if it's checked by a meter as part of vehicle inspection as in MA), you need to factor in the modest 93% tint that Audi already includes in OEM side and rear glass from the factory.

Calculation:
(State's legal tint %) divided by (factory tint %) = (target tint threshold %)

Example. In MA, the legal side and rear tint is 35%
35 / .93 = 37.6%; therefore a 40% tint would remain within the legal threshold. If a 35% tint was used (35 x .93) it would meter at 32.6% which would fail a metered inspection.

As others have noted, the laws vary greatly by state.

I went with Llumar Air Blue 80 given the laws where I live. Provides the heat / UV blocking benefits almost equal to their 30% charcoal tint while staying legal.

Aatish, my friend. Laws in IL have changed. You have for a long time been able to tint the back whatever you wanted. Front windows and windshield (except the top 5" or so) have been off limits. The law changed to 35% on the front doors. I checked before I tinted this A6 as I was going to go darker, but since 35% is legal in the front, I did that do play the safe card. Tired of being harassed.

To the OP, I did 35%. Nothing special on my tint that I know of. Works great. I don't get messed with either. My personal theory with 20 years of tinted car driving under me is that luxury sedans don't get messed with as much as 2 doors. Once I stepped into 4 doors, the tickets stopped.

Laws do vary by state. I wanted to be legal in California for liability/insurance reasons, so I went with Huper Optiks Nano Ceramic 70% (light tint) on the front doors and 30% (medium) on the rear doors and rear windshield. Ask your installer about the films. Some of the older films with metal in them can partially block your GPS. In California, any tint is not legal on the front windshield (except the upper portion), although you can do a clear film. My installer recommended against the front window film as the heat difference would be minimal with a clear film.

I also had a xPEL Ultimate clear bra and upper rear bumper apron done at the same time.

I did it all around as well, including the windshield. It's not legal in Ontario, Canada to have it on the windshield but having the same light tint all around makes it unnoticeable.

always ALWAYS check with the state restrictions. It will be a pain in the a$$ for a fix it ticket. 35% should be good enough.

OK, I called few local tint shops. A few place with a computer cut with Johnson film. But I decided to go with the shop with Madico film. It's not a computer cut but sounds like he has been doing tint long time. I'm still thinking going with 35%.

Thanks all for your input. I will update with photo next week! :-)

If your in Chicago, it is illegal for you to have the front windows tinted. Even with the State law allowing you to do so, it will still be illegal. Most cops have so much things to do, they wont pull you over for the tints. BUT, if you are pulled over for other reasons, they will write you a ticket while they got you.

Surprised local laws would trump state. Might want to look into a sunshading medical waiver if your local jurisdiction allows it. Virginia does and my optometrist concurred that glare and bright lights screw me up. Signed the waiver and that allowed me to go 35% all around, vs the 50% front limit in VA.
