Default '00 2.7T engine revs up and down while driving

I'm assuming a vacuum leak somewhere but looking for some insights before I dig in. Doesn't appear to do it until about 1500 rpm, boost is strong when you step on it so it can't be a major leak.

Ideas?

I have the same issues in my 04 2.7T. From 1500 to 2000rpms under light load it feels like the automatic transmission is shifting gears or locking up the torque converter. I have no codes. When I connect VCDS it shows no gear shifting.
This will be a great thread if someone has a solution.
Sorry this did help but I feel your pain.
Cheers,
Brian

I think this is fixed. Transmission was 2 quarts low. Filled it and went for a 6 mile test drive. Surging is gone, shifts like glass.

I knew it was low, but I've never experienced anything like that. Then again, I've never had a transmission that low on fluid before. Learn something new every day.

Default The bigger question is

OK, so how does a transmission lose fluid? Is it leaking from the perimeter of the bottom plate? Is it cracked?

Not doubting you, just don't understand where the fluid went.

Default How did you know it was low without filling it?

You HAD to have the car up and opened the BF hole...why did you not fill the trans properly at that point..or at least put fluid in it!!!

Just bought the car. 195k on it, in the process of going through it. Transmission wasn't acting up until it did a funny downshift that morning. Jacked it up, filled the transmission, problem solved.

Not sure what you think happened, but a surge at 1500 rpm or so doesn't strike me as a transmission problem. I've only got 900 some thousand miles on VW/Audi products over the past 30 years and haven't paid for many repairs, doing the bulk of them myself. This was a first.

I see what you are getting at. No, I assumed it was going to be a little low due to mileage. Wasn't expecting 2 quarts.

Gotta find out. Not digging in deep until the 4.2 is back together again. Hopefully by weekend.

Stupid question. Since no dipstick, how do you check and fill the auto trans?

Nevermind....Goggle is my friend. I think I may as well just do a fluid change.

Probably out of the tail shaft seal if it's never been replaced.
