audio test CD-disc?
Short of using a microphone and pink noise generator I'm wondering how useful these things are?

For what? To test frequency response?
Some of those disks have interesting tests for , say, resonances, etc.
If you mean to play a series of tones and listen to see if its flat? Forget it. There's ample evidence that we are not well calibrated to compare such notes with any accuracy.
If you have a mic, and can measure levels, and the patience to walk through the tones, i suppose they should work. Even a flat, calibrated SPL meter.
I really liked the systems that provided random noise, and had a spectrum analyzer to look at the result.
