Default 1999 vs 2001 Trunk Lid Match

Dear Audiworld,

Some jerk backed into my 1999 A6 quattro at CVS last week and busted the reverse light plastic shield and ripped the chrome strip at the bottom of the trunk lid off. All total with paint and labor is almost $2Kto fix! I found a used 2001 trunk lid on eBay for ~$310. The paint color is a close match (G2G2, but I need an aditional layer of key code KW36/98. Can anyone tell me what that means?).

My main question is will this trunk lid from a 2001 A6 fit on my 1999 A6? I've got 206,000+ miles on my A6 and I have done the timing belt service 15K ago, so I'm not planning on getting rid of her anytime soon!

Thanks AudiWorld

Not sure what an additional layer of key code is for a trunk but I do know that across all years on the C5 the trunk lid stayed the same with exception to the rear fogs that changed to 2 lamps instead of one lamp during the 02 face-lift.

It will fit, bolt up & function the same, but the 2001 is a different shade of silver to your '99.

01 is LY7W, 99 is LY7M -- your paint has more of a blueish hue to it.

And I have no idea what that means.

You might want to check car-part.com to see of anyone local to you has something, for less.. because $310 is kind of steep for a used trunk.

Where are you located?

Northeast Kentucky. Zip 41144. The lid was $150 + $165 shipping. I'm slighly confused because my car is Tornado Red (no blue or silver that I can see).

Also, I am planning on switching the lock to match my key. Will I need to reset the keyfob or is it connected to the vehicle's electronic system?

No reprogramming is necessary for a latch/lock assembly
