Will do. I've come across countless threads of the same thing with no solution.

Does it crank or no crank?

This is going to sound strange: Make sure the battery is fully charged, hold the gas pedal to the floor and turn the key to engage the starter until it putters.....I ran into this crap with my daughters 01 A6 with the dam cell phone chargers or dome lights left on......a jump and full pedal worked every time....even had to add a few gallons of gas a few times.

Good times but they learn, eventually.

So I've been told it was the engine speed sensor. So between the tow, diagnostic scan and sensor replacement it's $250. I'm going to pick it up later and hopefully it will be the last of this weird little issue.
AR15Texan. Yes it would crank, just no start.

There is a diagnostic for that if you have VAG COM. Look at RPMs on VAG COM when you are cranking. If they are not showing, meaning zero, then the engine speed sensor is bad. If some RPMs show it is not bad.

The problem with the CPS is that there are only two codes and at times none will show, usually when it's cold it works then it flakes out when hot.
Just like the CTS if they are over 8 to 10yrs old change them out....they will fail.

Yes, correct. However many do not know when it will not start when hot that it is the CPS because there is no DTC. I am saying look at the RPMs on VAG COM when cranking. If it shows zero, that is your clue the problem is the CPS.

While I was adding to the subject the failure to recognize or Kudos the very good point of what you mentioned leaves me to say yes you are absolutely correct as a good way to diagnose the CPS, my apology Clancy.
