LOL....and some of us are looking to spend $50K+ on an excellent used car, specifically a 2009 S6.....or even 2008 S8 with Bang&Olufsen sound system.

i've run into the exact same issue ('03 a6 w/4.2). $8k for dealership replacement, indie shop with rebuilt tranny (1 yr parts and labor unlimited mileage warrante)$4.5k. think i'm gonna go the indie route.

Always cheaper to replace at independent shops. Is it a ZF rebuilt transmission?

This problem is common on the 4.2 tranny the 5hp-24 the incorrect gear ratio.

Sigh -- this has been one of the hardest car-related decisions I have ever had to make. Did I mention that they originally quoted me $5777 to repair it with a remanufactured unit? Of that, $4070 was the unit. $5777 is more than the car is worth. But I just invested in valve cover gasket replacement a couple of months ago, so do I keep it limping along? Or quit now?

I have never had a car at the point of discard. This time, I am just exhausted from all the decision making. And on top of this, I am now worried about my '07 A4 transmission also, which seems to sometimes go into Drive with a bit of a bump. Is that one going to go too? It has 71K miles. Next time it is serviced, I will definitely have the fluid changed.
Hi yes i closely relate to your problems and the decision making that is so agonizing. Buying a 15 yr old car is probably never a good idea, even a ten yr old american car can begin it's self destructing and the repairs over exceed what the car is worth, as i am having the same problems with my allroad 2001 2.7 and am waiting for the bad news, which i assume is sure to come

As I mentioned, I ended up trading the A6 in 2012 for an A4 2.0T sedan that is still running well (kids' car). I also still have my 2007 A4 wagon, which has been very trouble-free, and continues to run well at 120+K miles. Probably the best car I have ever had, fingers crossed! We also recently added a 2013 A3 2.0T to the family.

Although I expected it to be sold at auction and parted out, I found out shortly after trading the 2001 A6, it was sold fairly locally because the dealer who bought it at auction called me for the radio code. I wonder how the transmission was fixed (was it a simple fix??) and if it is still on the road.
