Default 2003 A6 Radio Reception Problems

To start out. I'm probably one of the few people left that likes to listen to AM radio in the car. My reception was crystal clear up to about a year and a half ago. Then my reception went out on both AM and FM. I've taken it into the dealership several times and have replaced practically everything from the head unit to all of the antenna amplifiers and the amplifier switching unit. Even some of the cables.
End effect after a lot of money was that FM reception was OK but not as before. AM reception was very weak and sometimes didn't work.
Now I got my rear window tinted with a hybrid tint (I know that affects reception) and I have no AM reception but FM is mostly OK. I'm tired of messing with this.

Now the question.
Has anyone installed an aftermarket antenna with any success? I'm hesitant to put any holes in the body to attach an antenna but that may be my only option if I want clear reception.

Forgot to mention. I've searched the Audi forums and really have only found info for the A4's. Couldn't find much radio stuff for the A6.
