Default 2004 A6 2.7T Won't Start

Drove to several different places shutting off the car each time. Started no problem without any indications of problems. On my last stop the car would not start at all. No click, no turnover. The battery is only a month old. I measured 12.62V on the battery. Called the tow truck and they could not jump it either with their jump box. Had the car towed home now it sits in the driveway.

Any ideas what to check? All the normal dashboard lights come on, lights, radio, etc work. The alarm will arm/disarm without a problem. I suspect the immoblizer may be the issue but don't know how to check. The starter sounded fine each start before so I don't see how it could just die.

The Immobilizer light on the dash panel goes out 3 seconds after the key is put in the ignition. This is the proper operation according to the Bentley manual. So it doesn't look like the alarm systems is causing the trouble.

Unfortunately I don't have a scan tool to use.

check the RPM sensor.

Ran into the same problem, unfortunately it took replacing a ton of other stuff in order to figure out it was the RPM sensor, including a new fuel pump(which I didn't need)

Do you mean the engine speed sensor? That's located under the coolant resevior tank.

I talked with the Audi dealership service manager, who was quite helpful. He seems to think the ignition switch itself is dead. They can't get to my car until Monday so I have this weekend to troubleshoot it. Although I won't be replacing the ignition switch myself.

The service manager was an Audi technician for 8 years previously so he was knowledgely. Several things he asked about I can list here:

1. All the dash lights do come on as normal. Most go out when cranking. My car seems to do this just fine. Only the ECM, Battery, and seatbelt light stay on during cranking and he stated this is normal.

2. The gear selector display shows on the dash panel and follows the gear selection movements. My car does show the selector display and illuminates the correct gear selection when I make a gear change.

3. Check fuses under the E-box. Have yet to do this but will check it out. This is a long shot and most likely not the problem.

4. The Engine Speed Sensor nor camshaft sensors should not stop the car from cranking. According to the service manager these sensors may stop the car from turning over but not from cranking.

I also tried my other key fob and that did not crank the car either.

I tried the VAGCOM locater website for someone close by (next town over) but their email address was no good.

Default Loose Starter Interlock Relay

Using the Bentley Manual Wiring Diagrams. I checked and reseated the Starter Interlock Relay, J207, in the 13-fold relay panel under the driver side dashboard. The car then fired right up.

Received my VAGCOM cable today and scanned the ECU.

No glaring codes were set other than the high beam open circuit
