Default 99 2.8L a6 overheating problem!!!!no leaks

Hi, kinda wanted to get some other opinions on this, just happened out of nowhere for the first time since i bought the car the temp. gauge went up to about 85 percent in 8 miles vrs. its usuall 50%...i am a bodyman so i checked the obvious, fluid is full, both fans come on...when the car was at like 80% on the factory gaugue it wasnt blowing out really really hot air in the car through the vents, just a little hot...anyway im thinking its gotta be the Thermostat...if anyone can lead me in a direction i really need it...i need the car for work and i just need help...thakyou....-Joe

Thermostat is a good bet. Hot air through the vents/heater is generally an indication that the engine is running hot…it's also a good way to minimize the heat buildup in the engine with a stuck thermostat…the heater core doesn't have a thermostat so just turn the heat up all the way, flaps, etc., will maximize air through the heater core and dump heat from the engine. Problem, of course, is that a thermostat replacement on audis often leads to TB service if not water pump replacement.

if someone is going to tear it down to do the thermostat and/or water pump you might as well do the timing belt. You gotta take it off to get to those things anyways. Worst design ever. Awsome motor though.

If the TB was done at 60 or 70 it's due again around 140-160 so you can probably skip the TB, tensioners, etc. But the TB has to come off to get to the thermostat and wp…you should check the wp and tensioner/idler pulleys when you get to the thermostat. If they're loose/wobbly or feel 'grainy' or noisy, replace them now when you can. Get the OEM thermostat and be done with it. You can also get a guaranteed for life water pump from FCP Euro IIRC….the lifetime warranty won't cover the labor when you have to replace it, but still...
