Default 99' a6 2.8 cam sensor/cylinder 1-2-3 misfire

I purchased a 2000 audi a6 just the other day, it had a series of codes which I knew about when I purchased it. Slowly working my way through fixing what I can. The car itself is in excellent shape and I picked it up for a steal! I had the car started today for a short time and noticed a loud knocking coming from the pass. side valve cover. Getting miss firing on cylinder 1-3 and cam position sensor as well. I had a feeling maybe the cam chain tensioner was on it's way out so I started taking off the plastic covers on the engine. If you look in the picture you can see a nice sized hole in the pass side valve cover right above the cam chain. The chain is most definitely rubbing against it. I'm assuming the chain tensioner is due for a replacement? lol I'v done this on my b5 and b6 1.8t a4's, but the 2.8 is new to me! Anybody have any experience with it? Can it be done in the same fashion as the 1.8T tensioner?

Yup. Tensioner is shot. Should probably do the timing belt too, unless you know that it was done recently.

I can help you with a valve cover if you need one.

I appreciate the offer, I had just finished up ordering the parts before I logged back into here to check my thread >.< iv been contemplating doing the timing belt. It looks like it's been replaced sometime within the past couple years. I just finished up my 01 a4 b5 the other day. Chain tensioner, oil pump and tube, timing belt, water pump etc. thinking I'll wait till spring to dive into the timing belt on the 2.8. I need a break in between these major repairs lol

lots of recent threads on tensioner/ belt repalcement. you have laready worked on these cars before and you will see they are all very similar in repair aproach. Just go back a page or two and see what tools and kits people are ordering.

Not sure what the best deal is out there on tensioners so maybe others can chime in .
I would say you shuld be doing the following all in the same project

chain tensioner
chain tensioner gaskets
chain on that side
half moon gasket
timing belt
water pump
timing belt tensioner
timing belt tensioner roller
cam plugs
cam seals
thermostat
valve cover gaskets

Good luck ..its a fun project .. just not at -20C

These timing chains always seem to be a pain. The head looks identical to my 1.8T's minus one cylinder. I just finished up replacing the chain adjuster, adjuster gasket and half moon, both valve cover gasket. Doesn't seem to want to start, so I'm going to pull the valve cover back off and recheck the intake cam timing. Arrg! It doesn't help it's been roughly 10 degrees outside D:
