A6 2.7 with KO4's clutch problem
Sup guys,
So I bought my audi from an older guy who put the KO4 turbos in. He said he "replaced the clutch when he pulled the engine" however, after 2 months of driving it, i cannot give it more than 1/3 throttle.. dealer wants 3k to replace it with OEM, from what ive read, i need an upgraded clutch. I am going to do it myself here in a couple of weeks.
Question for you guys,
Do i go with a stage 2 or stage 3 clutch?
he said it is chipped and tunned, but who knows with this guy, i dont know how to tell.
Is there anything that i should do to it while i have the engine out?
I cant afford down pipes and exhauste, ECS tunning wants like 3k for the system. He put stock DV on them, should i upgrade them to the 710? (i think thats what they are called) .
I know they are KO4's because when i step on the gas, you can hear the loud winding of the turbos.
Any help would be appreciated!! I plan on taking Detailed Pictures or the project and labeling step by step on how i did it. im no expert on cars but ive replaced 3 engines on american made cars so. im hoping this wont be TOOO bad.

I just went thru this and its gonna be a big deal. Just make sure you've got a good place to do the work and take your time. What I did was this...
Had a stage 2 + I'd been fine tuning and inc. launch control and 2 launches the clutch was toast! So I began collecting parts:
1.ECS stage 3 Clutch kit with fidanza LWFW (clutch masters FX300 clutch)
2. Complete Timing belt kit with EVERYTHING seals, valve cover gaskets, wp, thermostat
3. Used KO4's
4. Lots of degreaser and rags...
Well 2 weeks later I'd learned ALOT about my A6 and I was finally on the road again. The parts mentioned above were just to get started. I ended up replacing the following as well:
Crank pos. sen,
Cam pos. sen
Most vacuum lines
both front cv's
slave cylinder
Cam tensioner
transmission ( long story...)
What I'm trying to say is be prepared to spend some money that you hadn't budgeted to begin with as things seem to escalate quickly with your car in 1000 pcs! The DV's your talking about are 710 valves the important part is the letter behind the 710. You want the 710N valves but if yours are working for now I'd focus on things like timing components and other items needed to get you reliable while the engine is out. I'd worry about vacuum lines, turbo oil lines, ANY oil leaks, and take plenty of pics. If you get stuck there are guys like me who have been thru this and can help.
Good luck

LOL..you know(?) they're K04s from the loud winding?

In addition to all the stuff above, consider new O-ring seals for the fuel injectors. Cheap insurance.

Well I have about 2500 budgeted for this. I hope that's enough. The guy I got the car from said he had stock DV and that was causing the car to shake when I got on the gas. He did a timing job when he had to put the motor 25k miles ago and that's when he upgraded the turbos to KO4's. However, I pulled the plugs as someone on here suggested, and he had 4 champion plugs and 2 iridium plugs. All gapped at .059+. So I bought all new double laser platinum from autozone (15$ each) and it fixed the problem, but there was oil in the spark plug wells so I cleaned them and with the new plugs everything was great... For a month, it started doing it again. Pulled a plug and was oil in there again... Got some valve cover gaskets from the dealership (mistake considering they were $90 each side) that fixed the problem, but that's when the clutch started slipping..
I read on here that the stock turbos you cannot hear, and if you had KO4s or bigger, u could hear them spoiling up so that's what I'm going with since I can't see the turbos when I'm underneath.
Is there a way to tell what stage in the car is set up in?? I honestly have tried to find info on how to tell what stage a car is but there's nothing I can find. I'll probably go with the stage 3 clutch because hopefully it will last longer if it's ment for something with more power than I actually have.
Another question, I've seen videos of people putting The turbos in, and adjusting the waists gate. Video kinda sucks but is there a way to test how much boost it will put out without actually putting it all back together?? I have no idea how much boost I'm putting out right now cause there's no boost gauge and my OBD meter won't tell me cause it's not a diseal or some ****. I plan on putting a boost gauge in while I'm doing all this ****.

I was reading your post and was thinking a boost gauge would be important for you. It sounds like you want to build some power and itll help you figure out a couple things regarding your tune and you can install one in about 45 minutes depending on where/how you mount it. Good to hear the timing has been done and as far as the ko4's go well I could hear my 03's some after my exhaust was done. My 04's are louder though for sure. The inlet pipes are bigger for ko4's but taper to be the same as 03's by the time you could measure easily but my inlets for the 04's are black with the originals being silver... do you have vagcom or if your obd tool will read maf g/s you could read that measurement because the 04's will get much higher numbers at wide open. The new plugs... Did you gap them to .32?

This + torque app on android and you have a boost gauge as well as many other gauges. Also a simple code scanner.

Well I took pictures of my OBD before my clutch started going out.
@730 RPM (idle) my MAF (g/s) was 4.00 IAT was at 41C
@2000 MAF 37 IAT 36c
@5451 MAF 310.5 IAT 27c
I have an iPhone so that torq + won't work :/ all the iPhone ones I found were like 100$. I could just get a booste gauge for that.
I found an invent guage before but I can't find one for the 02 a6's..
I have stock exhaust right now. I'll be pretty pissed if I pull the engine and find out the turbos aren't the 04's. Means probably everything the guy told me was full of ****.
As far as a cat-back exhaust. I Don't think I wanna spend 1-1500 on one. There's not many videos on YouTube for 02 A6 exhausts.

310 g for maf at 5400 would indicate you are running ko4's beware the stock maf runs off its axis map at 320g/s and the car would gain from doing a bigger maf. The ecu would need the maf maps modified to work with the bigger maf but a good tuner or yourself with some research can take care of that. I'd think your stock injectors are getting on to the duty cycle limit based on your hardware and the maf numbers...

I bought magnaflows, vibrant resonators and ssac dps for mine and installed the dps and took the rest to the muffler shop and had them fab duals up. I think I have 800 or so in my whole exhaust and it sounds awesome... The power was noticeable and the sound well its music at 5000 rpm in a tunnel!
