I'd almost guess that the rubber latch cover that likes to fall apart is somewhere in the fan area and the blades are smacking it, OP check
to see what's up with those blades because something looks and sounds strange in that area, it don't sound like a metallic knock.

I'd also be looking for a bad bushing/bearing somewhere near there, even a water pump bearing.

OP should use a long handled screwdriver (carefully!!!) and put the end down on bearing housing, etc., and ear to handle end…should be able to locate noise.
