Default yeah, from what I've read, these are starting to fail like clockwork on 2000-2002 cars.
the early A8s (97-99) also have this problem.

The newer A8s (04-09) will be failing too.

Hi, Ive got 73K on my 2003 A6 4.2...will be doing timing belt soon. Do yuo have any left. Would like to get one and install before problems start. thanks
