A6 Prestige Brake DIY and OEM Brake Grabbing
Wanted to share couple notes on my brake job. We have a 2013 A6 Prestige, with around 40k miles. The brake warning recently came on and I went through a few posts here to see what to do. First of, thank you for all the great posts and advice.
I went with Akebono Ceramic pads front and back, part numbers EUR1549 and EUR1547A, decided to look at the rotors to see if those needed to be swapped too, Audi recommended it. But turned out the rotor thickness was fine and no ridges.
Front pad install:
- Couple challenges were to find a 9mm Hex Bit, eventually found a set on Amazon that had a 9mm bit, second challenge was that the front pads still had wear left and they were on really tight, lot of rubber mallet and prying, plus penetrating lube.
Rear Pad Install:
- I had heard that the rear would require VAGCOM or some aux battery connection to retract the piston due to a electromechnanical parking brake. What I did was simply ensure P brake was off, then disconnect the caliber and remove the servomotor from the caliber assembly (on with two torx bolts, comes off real easy) and manually turn the motor to allow the piston to be pushed in. Took about 30-45mins each side with cleaning everything real well.
Ever since we got the car, we have complained about the brakes being grabby and when you came to a full stop there was always a noticeable jolt. when releasing the brakes there was also a noticeable grabbing/grinding noise, to which Audi dealer said they can make every car make that sound, told them to show me how to get this car NOT to make it - to which they had no answer.
That noise and 'grabbiness' is now completely gone with Akebono ceramics, and the pedal feels very similar to me, if anything, it is now more linear and predictable than before, and the pads are still completely new. No squeaks or rattles either, pads fit in really well.

You did what you are supposed to: Searched, found solutions, tackled the job, showed us hurdles you've encountered and provided closure.
Wish others follow the same foot steps as there is already a wealth of information on this forum.

There is a slight difference between parts and service procedures between a C5 and C7 platform car by 9 years, so your best bet is to seek info there.
Also you can move and edit posted threads, I can't on yours.

Just being facetious..I can't seem to figure out how to do either, help the brother out..

Guess I'm confused. I thought a 2013 A6 was the C7 platform. I have a 2012 A6 Prestige and found the parts and VagCom description exactly like I have seen in prior posts on the subject. The parts listed are what mine calls for when I need brakes.

I think anon2000 first posted in the C6 section and his thread was moved to the C7 section.
