A6 Quatro ('99) just started stalling a few times a day
My 1999 A6 Quatro has recently started stalling when warm. It usually happens if you make a left turn - the RPMs seem to drop to around 200 RPM (two ticks on the gauge). The dealer looked at it and said they wanted to put a new throttle on the car. This seems pretty drastic (and expensive!). I looked for leaks, hose that fell off, etc - but could not find any obvious problem.
Is this a known problem with a known cure?

It does sound like a problem with the idle stabilization. This could be loose connection but unless there are any obvious loose connections on the vacuum side of things but it sounds like an electrical fault to me. The idle is controlled by a combination of ignition timing and air. The main control being the amount of air allowed in when the throttle flap is closed. The ignition timing adjustment is used for small compensatory control to allow for extra load at idle such as heated rear window, air con, heated seats etc... it just advances the timing a few degrees to increase the idle speed. This has the benefit of being almost instant in its effect, whereas throttle adjustment takes a few millisecs to operate, by which time the engine could stall.

A dealership would probably replace the complete throttle body w/ "all" auxiliary parts, especially looking at the age of car and post (suggesting it was still under warranty). With parts covered by warranty, its just too much of a hassle shaving corners and having it come right back.
