Yeah well, don't believe everything you read on the internet Heck it's pretty darn easy to tell if you have a 6 vs 8 cylinder car...just count the spark plugs. But as many have already stated, there are def 4 different engine types in in the north America market. I used to own a 2.8 C5.
You are buying a car which is coming on 20 years of age, so expect things to fail and when they do, hope it's isn't a major part. You are more likely than not the 4th-6th owner of the vehicle and the previous maintenance and such is all luck at this point. I always tell folks, when you buy a used vehicle, you are buying the owner as much as the car. But in your case, it'll be near impossible to deduce the car and maintenance plied to the vehicle, or lack thereof.
If you are looking for a cheap car to run and this is your first Audi...get the 2.8, it's generally regarded as more reliable and less maintenance intensive. However, I did own one and can tell you that I did a LOT of work on it, from the standard TB, idlers, tranny fluid, diff, etc...all the way to strut replacement, CV rebuilds, etc...

Look in the trunk by the spare tire. There should be a white sticker with a list of all the options as the car was made, assuming it is still original. Use this site VAGLinks.com - Over 2000 Links to VW & Audi Stuff ...V-A-Guh-Links ;-) or Ross-Tech Wiki or just Google the codes and find out what you have.

Flaring during shifting is the sign of a problem, but worse than that, it also CAUSES excessive wear very quickly.
If it does not get better after a change, assume you are on the short end of the transmissions life, and drive gently.

My 2.7T is going up on stands to get a couple of leaks fixed next week. Shifting like a dream now that the fluid level is right. I'll be buying more fluid.

What you may find is that you are a bit low on fluid. Given the age, I would drop the pan, scrape all the crap out, replace the filter, then refill. If you want to be cheap, find Valvoline Extended Life Dex-Merc. In it's past life it was VW certified. Ran 150,000 miles with it on one, and have about 20,000 miles on the other. The 2.7T has only a couple of quarts for a couple of hundred miles. Can find it in about any parts store.
