Default ABS and Brake warning lights coming on

I've recently had my ABS and Brake lights come on. But it's been completely random and until yesterday, they've never stayed on for more than 2 or 3 seconds. Yesterday they didn't go off. Brakes seem to work fine and when I came into work this morning, the lights didn't come on. I checked my fluids and there's plenty. Haven't had a chance to take a wheel off and look under there yet.

Would this happen if my pads were low? Or is there some sensor that I need to look at? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you do any searching? This is one of the top five most common problems.

Default You need a new ABS control module

There's a LOT of threads related to this and in fact I've had the exact same issue.

Your ABS control module is fried. Check out Module Master or BBA Remanufacturing online for how to remove instructions and how to send to them for a relativeky cheap rebuild.

Had the same issues with my ABS and Brake light staying on. Was random at first, but eventually the lights would stay on all the time. ABS did not wort either when the lights were on. I finally broke down and sent my module to ModuleMaster for a rebuild about two weeks ago. Service was outstanding and now my ABS works just fine and the lights don't come on every time I start the car.

I agree with the first answer - get it scanned with a vag-com. Everyone above is right that it MAY be the control module.

Does it ever go out?

The other issue that could cause this is the brake light switch at the pedal. I had a situation in my mom's car where the two lights would come on randomly while driving. I couldn't figure out what it was - tried going over pumps, turning, whatever - nothing triggered it on a reliable basis. It turned out to be the brake light switch, which I had previously replaced, that wasn't positioned correctly.

Basically, the first little bit of travel in the switch triggers the "test" switch for the car, and the rest actually triggers the brake light. I didn't have it set so the pedal compressed the switch all the way when it wasn't being pressed, which made the computer think the switch was being hit all the time, but the lights were not coming on - triggering a fault in the system.

In other words - it could be a simple issue or a big issue (like the module) - vag-com will be a big help.

*edit* - I thought you meant ABS & ESP - but it looks like you're talking about ABS and the brake light in the center cluster display itself..if so, disregard most of the above, but I still think a vag-com might help.

Ha I have the exact issue. I'm gonna swing by the shop tomorrow to pull the codes. Pretty sure I'm gonna have to send the module out. Funny how it just started after hitting a massive pot hole.
