A 2000 model will have the immobiliser in the dash.
Immo 2 yes - from 1997 to 2004 on the A6.
The fact that you've had it running and now it's quit and you have a multitude of dash problems, your problem is the dash.
Sort out why the dash is giving you grief, and the immobiliser will sort itself out...

VCDS connection problem, I'm not sure. But I think everything ODBII goes via the ECU (don't know for sure, just a bit of logic).
As you said VCDS lite, I'm assuming you have a generic cable? These can have touch and go connection issues I've found. Also, the ECUs on these cars are slow (These ECUs are mid 90's designs custom made to do a simple task (for a computer anyway!), so they're not even as advanced as a mid 90's PC), so give it some time...

All sounds logical.
I just bit the bullet and bought a full VCDS cable so hoping for some better results in a couple of weeks when it ships from the states to the UK.
Thinking the lack of connection might be due to low power in the battery and jump batteries so maybe jump from my car with the engine running to see if we get power to the control modules.
So plan is to try and get to all connectors on the dash and reseat them before trying to get connected with vcds to see what codes show up.

a quick question - if the immo has already tripped, does it need to be reset by audi?

ok so spent a couple of hours at the car tonight.

Swapped in a new battery, ran the car via jump cables to my other a4 to keep the battery charged whilst checking things.

- left battery disconnected for 20 minutes

Findings:

- Reseated the two cables on the cluster - no change
- Reseated the two cables on the ECU - no change
- checked all fuses - all look fine

Plugged in a real vcds cable and managed to get some scans out although nothing from the cluster or engine

Took a few pics and below is the scan log.

The cluster code is 4B0920950D and only had two cables attached (green & blue). There was a much smaller black connector but I could find no cables hanging free behind the cluster?!

Annoyingly there are no clusters on ebay for the same code - would another model work such as the three connector versions? any idea of codes?

Question now is do you think it is the cluster being duff or does the lack of connectivity to the engine module suggest more issues?

Also would the flickering power to the cluster suggest a duff cluster or a bad connection or ground somewhere?

Where do the other end of the cluster connectors go to so I can try reseating them at the other end?

Bit of reading and I think I have a cluster v1 and a half - digital clocks but only two connecters!
Testing the vcds cable said no can bus
Immobiliser light is flashing - do we think this might be v1 or v2 immo?

late night thought, could I take the ecu and/or cluster and plug it into my 98 a4 with a 1.8t aeb engine to see if either show up in vcds?

looks like it is the cluster!
tried a working diesel cluster and the power appears fine - no flashing, reseting tests etc.

On email at the moment to send off the cluster for repair...
