Default Strange thing happened today

i had just finnished replacing the rear brake pads. (automatic 99 a6 quattro 2.8)

i was under the hood and just poking around and i decided to disconnect the MAF sensor cuz i remembered reading that without the MAF the ecu would tune to a preset fuel ratio. i was doing this because i think i am running a little rich.

i started the car and what do you know the transmission went into fail safe mode!
i got scared so i plugged the MAF back in and took a trip to auto zone to bed the new pads and see what i could get out of the obd II reader.

the cel came on not while the MAF was unplugged but after i had plugged it back in and was on the way to autozone.

i got the codes p1857, wich i found has somethign to do with engine controll and is probably there from the tranny going into fail safe mode.

also got p0102 wich is the MAf low input wich was expected.

can these two be related?

i am thinking about selling my A6 and getting a VW, mainly cuz i want a manual car. I would proably get a Jetta 1.8t.

Suggestions?

my hypothesis about running rich comes from the fact that acceleration feels a bit sluggish, plus i am getting like 14-15 mpg.

the codes i got are listed in the original post.
